Co-op Week was the focus of the week of 17th to 22nd of October.

This year's theme, "Cooperative Enterprises Build A Better World" is also the theme for 2012- The International Year of Co-ops, so declared by the United Nations.
Local cooperators were invited to celebrate Co-op Week on Tuesday, October 18th, in the covered area outside the Kootenay Country Store Co-op at 295 Baker Street in Nelson.
UCCC members celebrated their successes, and cooperators had a chance to win a co-op basket of goodies--courtesy of our local co-ops and credit unions. The highlight was the breakfast hosted by the UCCC - Upper Columbia Cooperatives Council - in Nelson and we sent 4 delegates from the KCSHC : Irene, Alden, Jim and Monique.

Politicians and media were on hand along with Corky Evans to host and award the honours.
- Co-ops are democratic
- Co-ops are member-owned
- Co-ops are ethical
- Co-ops put people first
- Co-ops build community
- Co-ops make the world a better place
Member Cooperatives were given an award in recognition of their work in 2011 and KCSHC is proud to
display its certificate which reads:
Co-op Week 2011
Certificate of Recognition Awarded to our Member Kootenay Columbia Seniors Housing Co-op
For perseverance and maintaining focus on your goal in the face of obstacles.

January 10, 1935 - October 22, 2011

On October 22, 2011 Walter left us following a tragic car accident.
His absence is deeply felt at Grandview where he had been a very active
contributor since moving here. Walter had retired from his logging contracting
business. He was deeply rooted in his Doukhobor culture, a member of the Spiritual
and Cultural associations of that community so it was no surprise that Walter was
part of the group who first envisioned the Seniors Housing Cooperative. He became
one of the first residents of Grandview Heights.
Once settled in his home he quickly busied himself, serving first on the Board
then on the Strata Council. He took on the contract for cutting the grass in summer
and clearing the snow in winter but leaving time to cultivate his garden and easy
friendships with neighbours.
Walter was a perfect example of what constitutes "a Good Man",
always ready to help anyone. Spaceeba Walter! Thank you.
Rest in Peace
The heart hath its own memory, like the mind. And in it are enshrined the precious keepsakes, into which is wrought the giver's loving thought.

Annual Lapsha Making
On October 20th the Grandview Ladies organized their Fall Lapsha making fund raiser.
Our lapsha is in high demand. About 20 busy bees worked from 6 am to 6 pm in two shifts
to produce bags of traditional Russian noodles. Some brave souls stayed for both shifts.
The goal is to create bonds and build up the funds needed to equip the kitchen
of our Community Room planned for Château Grandview.A midday lunch break gathered
everyone around the table for a Doukhobor feast.
The Cooperative Spirit was in evidence all day long with hard work, stories and
laughter. By Seniors...For Seniors...
