Walk the Kootenays

Active Communities Committee of Castlegar has adopted a wellness challenge from Selkirk College called Walk the Kootenays in an effort to increase the overall activity levels of citizens in the Castlegar and surrounding area. You can follow our progress on the Active Communities website Walk the Kootenays page.

Each week Helga has been encouraging the 41 participants from Grandview Heights in this new Wellness Challenge:

Just an update on our progress. Last week we walked 928 km, which was also the most walked by any group. This isn't really a competition, but doesn't it feel good that a group of seniors did the most. Granted, we have the most participants, and the City of Castlegar didn't report, but why should we get picky about details. In total we have walked 3,691 km.

If you didn't get your km to me for wk. 4 , just add them on to your total when you report.
Happy hiking,
~ Helga

Kootenay Savings Presentation

On January 22, 2010, Kootenay Savings Foundation made a donation of $30,000 for a Community Access Room in the Grandview Manor. It is a marvellous gift to the community of Castlegar, since all sorts of public events can be held in this room.

Forrest Drinnan, Nick Ogloff and Aron Burke were on hand to make the presentation to Harry Jukes the KCSHC Vice-President and Elmer Verigin, our Project Manager. The event was recorded by the Grandview photographer, Nora Jukes. Other media present were Matthew Peterson, editor of Castlegar News (and papers in Nelson and Trail) and Dan Caverly of Global TV. Global News visits Grandview

The Promotion Committee is hard at work, preparing their spring campaign. Further to the displays and presentations at the local malls, we are taking to the air waves!

On January 25, 2010 Global News was on site for interviews and filming the winter activities at Grandview. Residents were enjoying the freshly fallen snow, old and young had a snow ball fight, the skiers were out and neighbours were visiting. It will be shown on the local Shaw cable over the next few months to invite the viewers to come and visit us.

Sunset Extravaganza

On the evening of January 23rd our photographer Nora Jukes was mesmerized by a spectacular sunset and took front seat on her patio to record the unfolding celestial show.  See the entire sequence in the Photo Gallery.

Computer Courses

Several residents tired of staring at their computers, tired of feeling left behind by technology, have decided to take advantage of the free Fall program offered by cbal (Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy).  Six of us registered today, and more are thinking about it. There is amazing support in participating together. We are all beginners, so there is no shame about our limitations - we encourage and help each other. That is another advantage of living in community. We are nudged beyond our comfort zone and risk together what we would not risk alone.

Member Testimonials

Monique has been collecting updated and new testimonials from current residents of the co-op who wish to share their experience of living in the community. If you would like to write something to encourage others to join us, please do! As you can see, some members have even written lovely poetry to express their feelings! You'll also note that in the sidebar on the left, there is now a permanent link to this section, to make it easier to find.

New and updated testimonials will be listed here as they come in.
