Before we even started building the first house at Grandview Heights, we became a family!

October 28, 2007, the day that John Adams, Chair of the Care Committee, was to give his report to the Kootenay Columbia Seniors Housing Cooperative monthly meeting, he had an accident while cleaning leaves from his eaves.  The ladder went to the right and John went to the left.  As a consequence, he ended up in the Castlegar Emergency Ward, a few hours before the meeting.

Not concerned about what was happening to him (it turned out to be a broken pelvis), he was more concerned about not being able to give his report at the meeting that night.  He phoned Elmer Verigin from the Emergency ward to explain his plight, and Elmer, just having returned an hour earlier from a three day trip, rushed to his bedside.  John was deeply touched by this prompt response.

At the Trail Hospital, John received many visits from concerned members over the next few weeks.  When he was told that he would need a wheelchair for the next few months, the members rallied around the project of building a ramp to allow John easy access upon his return.

On November 19th, instead of a few volunteers, about 20 showed up, complete with food, coffee, cameras, hammers and tools.  Not only was the ramp built but the lawn was raked and the eaves were cleaned again.  This is what family does when a family member needs help!!
